Fantasic. I couldn't put it down!!!As Edward Robb Ellis was writing his diary I was being born. I've often wondered what my pre-though, pre-war life was like now I know. Through the eyes of one man who's life mirrored, yet preceded, my own 30 years later. I wonder, in 1998, is ERE still alive. I hope so!!

Dragonflies and Damselflies of Cape Cod
Published in Paperback by Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, Inc. (October, 1997)
Average review score:

Hunting for DragonsThis book made damsels and dragons part of my life. While working as an interpretive ranger at the Cape Cod National Seashore, Virginia Carpenter gave a lecture with the release of this book. Though I was aware of these magnificent critters, I really had not looked at them. This book opened my eyes! Written for the naturalist in everyone, you can't help but be drawn into amazing diversity of colors, sizes, and lifestyles. Too bad it is no longer in print, as there are few available references on these organisms. I lost my copy, but will continue my hunt to find a new copy! ....

Drive Yourself Sane: Using the Uncommon Sense of General Semantics
Published in Paperback by Institute of General Semantics (December, 1994)
Average review score:

Introducing KorzybskiAlfred Korzybski was one of the great unacknowledged geniuses of the twentieth century. He influenced a host of other thinkers and writers, among them Buckminster Fuller, Robert Heinlein, L. Ron Hubbard. This is an excellent introduction and explanation of his work, and I recommend it. Korzybski's great work, "Science and Sanity" (1933), can be a difficult book at over 760 pages. I thus I tried to get this book, "Drive Yourself Sane," (about 200 pages) but the first edition was out of print. I was forced to tackle "Science and Sanity" alone. I had to read it three times through over a period of several years. I wish I'd had this book, "Drive Yourself Sane" (second edition) to help me through some of the rough spots. It is well organized, nicely laid out, and has a valuable glossary in the back. It also includes valuable personal accounts from the authors. Even an expert in general semantics can gain knowledge from this book. I found that it filled in gaps in my knowledge of the subject (general semantics), gave me some new insights, and told me what others had been doing in the field since 1933. Regardless of whether you are interested in Korzybski or not, you won't finish this book without at least a little IQ rise.

Dutch Farmer in the Missouri Valley: The Life and Letters of Ulbe Eringa, 1866-1950 (Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Centennial Series)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Illinois Pr (Pro Ref) (April, 1996)
Average review score:

I knew U. Eringa personally, and the book reflects him well.Eringa's warm Christian personality is revealed through his letters and brief autobiography. I am happy to have the original letters on which much of the book is based; they were given me by the man in Holland who found them in his attic. Eringa's faith was passed on to his children and grand-children, one of whom I am.

Dv8: Neighborhood Threat
Published in Paperback by DC Comics (October, 2002)
Average review score:

Bad People Doing Bad Things To Other Bad People. What would a group of super-powered teen-agers REALLY be like? Certainly not fresh-faced do-gooders, as Gen13 or Generation X would have us believe. But I'd hope they wouldn't be QUITE as bad as The Deviants, the protagonists of DV8: Neighborhood Threat. As portrayed by Writer Warren Ellis, The Deviants are foul-mouthed, immoral, murderous, horny, incestuous, lazy, greedy punks, at the mercy of their handler, Ivana Baiul, and her crony, the crazed Sideways Bob. Ivana has her own mysterious agenda, often sending the kids on suicide missions just because she can. As bad as The Deviants are, though, the people they come up against are even worse, and it does provide a vicarious thrill to see The Deviants dish out a well deserved serving of comeuppance to these baddies.
Ellis' stories are compelling, and the characters are all nicely developed by the end of the collection. The art (By Humberto Ramos) is nice, but at times it's hard to make out what's going on in a panel. (This is some of his earlier work.) The book also includes a new introduction by Ellis, and a cover gallery of the reprinted issues (#'s 1-6, and the special Wizard #1/2 issue), including the "Seven Deadly Sins" variant covers for issue #1.
Overall, it's a fun read for people with strong stomachs. Here's hoping DC collects the rest of Ellis' DV8 run.

Echoes of Distant Thunder: Life in the United States, 1914-1918
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group (December, 1974)
Average review score:

Easily ReadThis book was well-written and easily read -- not a dry, pedantic non-fiction tome as so many history books can be. Until about 2/3 of the way through, Ellis did an excellent job of keeping his personal politics out of the mix and just telling the events in a compelling and interesting manner. One most gets an inkling of his inner leanings when it comes to the "battle" between the proletariat and the bourgeosie. It's easy enough to find accounts of what went on on the battlefields of the War, but I was thrilled when I finally found one that described what life was like at home! Thumbs up!

Elephant Games: And Other Playful Poems to Perform
Published in School & Library Binding by Boyds Mills Pr (September, 1995)
Average review score:

Funny and Thought provokingThis is another great book of children's poems by Bagert. The poems make you laugh and think and are wonderful read-alouds. Written with the young performer in mind, they seem just like something kids would think about. This is the second of his books we've giggled our way through and have recommended them to many friend and teachers. It's well worth the time.

Ellis Stanyon's Best Card Tricks
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (November, 1999)
Average review score:

Mix bookThis was the first book i bought when i decided to begin magic thing. Well, actually, this is a great book but it not only contains basic stuff - beginners - but also it contains very advanced stuff - yet i cannot do - so i really suggest this book, since i learned amazing tricks from this book... Have Fun!!
Nonetheless, there are some great tips throughout. The authors demonstrate that with a little simple sewing or refinishing, or just "the Christian attribute of patience," you can have a comfortable, elegant house that's just your style without spending a lot. I learned quite a bit and would recommend the book to anyone who's not fazed by the religious references.
